Tanzania leaders challenged on Africa’s liberation

TANZANIAN leaders have been challenged to acknowledge and respect the historical support they received from Cuba before and during the struggle for liberation in order to enhance the existed friendship for socio-economic development.
 Professor of Law at the University of Dar es Salaam, Issa Shivji made the call in Dar es Salaam yesterday during the opening of the photographic exhibition on Ernesto Che Guevara who was one of activists for the liberation in Tanzania.
He said there were several countries including Cuba that contributed a lot in the liberation movements and that the past and present leaders are supposed to honour Cuba for its support.
Shivji who is the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere chair in Pan -African studies, described Cuba is one of the countries that contributed to development of Tanzania by providing grants free of conditions.
According to him, Cuba supported Tanzania through the construction of agricultural schools in Kilosa District, Morogoro Region.
“It is important for a country to identify its friends in order to know who to cooperate with in accelerating the development,” he said.
Shivji cited the contribution played by Che Guevara in the liberation struggle for Congo and Angola.
For his part, Ambassador, Republic of Cuba, Jorge Luiz Tormo said Che Guevara was key leader of the new revolutionary government of Cuba.
“He always had a strong internationalist thoughts. He was true to his ideas.
Above all, he was always be capable of feeling deeply any injustice committed against anyone, anywhere in the world, ’’the Ambassador said.
He said that, President Nyerere had given the nod to Cuban participation and the use of its territory for transportation of fighters, supply of weapons and various materials for the Cubans to help the ongoing struggle in Congo.
Ambassador added that, his dairy has the story and the critical analysis of the first international mission of Cuba and the unfulfilled dream of helping some African nations to free them from colonialism.
