PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa has once again assured Tanzanians that the government was working to resolve sugar shortage currently facing the nation.
Speaking to Muslim leaders and leaders of Dar es Salaam region’s peace committee, Majaliwa said 20,000 tonnes of the commodity were distributed on Friday to some parts of the country.
The prime minister had invited the leaders on Friday evening to break the fast at his Oysterbay residence in Dar es Salaam.
Majaliwa said another consignment of 35,000 tonnes of sugar was expected to be distributed throughout the country in the near future, ordering that prices for the newly imported sugar should not exceed 2,200/- a kilogramme.
He said sugar factories in the country had started production, with Kagera Sugar Company in Kagera region producing 300 tonnes to be distributed in Kakonko, Kibondo, Kasulu, Uvinza and Kigoma districts in Kigoma region.
Majaliwa directed trade officers in district councils to make sure that the commodity was made available in shops and deal with traders who hoarded the commodity.
In another development, the prime minister appealed to traders in the country to stop hiking prices of foodstuffs during this month of Ramadan, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad according to Islamic belief.
“Hiking prices during this month of fasting amounts to punishing those who are fasting,” he said.
